Life Drawing – Week 4

This week we focused on how to draw objects so that depending on how close they are to you how they will change size. I felt this was easier because of the practice we had previously with drawing with perspective. I do need more practice with this but i think it went well, and with drawing from a life model you can see proportions a lot easier than in a picture, like you can see what size a hand is in relation to the models head. Below are some drawings i did from the class.

Tonal Week and practising character designs

Using the previous groups notes we used the character design plan and the style of adventure time to draw characters and monsters, below are some of the characters that the group designed.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Also as a side note the marble was created during the Victorian era hence the Victorian civilisation ALSO Cassie talked about penny dreadful in her blog which is a TV show set in the Victorian era that brings together classic literary characters like Dorian Gray and Dr. Frankenstein and explores their origins and theres a whole story with it but one of the important parts is that they hunt monsters. I really liked this idea so i brought it to the group and we developed further on it with the character Earl (Named by Robert from the first group). Some of items that the character has are:

  • A hat with spinning blades like Oddjob in James Bond
  • Cane Sword
  • A funky looking pistol
  • and a crossbow that shoots glass arrows

In one of the photos above you can see this and in another you can see him fighting a large monster.

ANYWAY  back to environment design, we looked at how a marble was made and it was basically layers of glass moulded and melted and twisted together to form it. Marbles can vary but the one that we looked like this:

marble ball

Found here: http://all-free-download.com/free-photos/download/marble_ball_183817.html

We decided that we would create multiple layers for the world, here are 3 designs for the marble that we created.

marble world layers 2 marble world2 marble world4

This was the one that we decided on in the end:

marble world layers 2

So once we found out how the world would look we decided to start and plan what the layout of the layers would look like. We decided that each layer would have the same layout however as the world got deeper it would get slightly different like for example mountains would turn to volcanoes, buildings and villages would be broken and cracked or forests would turn darker, creepier, more dangerous and more overgrown with plant life and dangerous and evil creatures.

Below is one of Claire’s tonal drawings that she did, once she uploaded it to our group chat each of the group members took it and added our own designs to it making it our own:

The group also did drawings of what a forest would look like at different levels. The group also did some tonal studies of different parts of the world like certain buildings and volcanoes.

OH almost forgot here’s some other stuff that the group worked on. Since we were going for the layered world we wanted the centre of the world to have this super evil creature at the centre, like this big Cthulhu type creature, Bethnay suggested however that instead of this massive creature we use a comedic creature for effect so that nobody would expect and this wonderful piece of art was born

P.S. this was the layout plan that we decided upon for the tone of the world and how it would look getting deeper:

  • Top Layer – Victorian civilisation, bright, rounded edges
  • Second Layer – overcast, darker, broken, tinted darker, mutated beings, people who look victorian but are mutated more than the top layer people
  • Third Layer – dark, shadows, sharpened edges, scraggly trees, brambles, monsters, evil creatures, similar to the world of the game Limbo, Arkham City or Don’t Starve with the creatures, monsters and large shadows.

Practising Character Designs and Making Monsters

We were given designs by the previous group who worked on the world and they gave us the character designs and how they drew the characters so to get into the swing of designing the world we drew some of the characters and created some of our own monsters!

Outline of how to draw the characters given to us by the previous group:

The Marble World!!

This week we were given the task of the marble world! This world was a lot of fun to work with because of how much the previous team had done, the amount of research into character designs, monsters, how a marble was made gave our group a really great starting point for our work.

The previous group gave us their blogs, I mostly looked at cassie’s because of the links and sketches that she had on it and it was really well laid out and helpful with our development of the world, below is her blog address where you can find more extensive knowledge on what her group went through but i will be linking into her work and links with my own groups work.

So we were tasked with looking at environments and compositions of the world as well as tonality in our drawings.

Life Drawing – Week 3

This week we did perspective. We looked at the horizon line and i thought i knew how to do it but i actually really don’t at all, drawing perspective correctly is actually pretty hard but with practice i will keep improving.

We started the lesson by just trying to draw perspective using chairs positioned at different angles, we did this by drawing our horizon line at our eyeline then drawing boxes with perspective depending on where the box is in our eyeline, for instance if the chair was above our eyeline then we would draw the bottom of the box since we could see it.

After this we were brought into the life drawing room where we usually work and were told to draw the chairs on the platform and the person sitting in it, it was tough but by the end of the class I feel that i definitely improved.

Second Group/New Group World Project – Cracked Pot Idea and Parallel Paradoxical Universe

20151006_121239 20151006_121240 20151006_121242 20151006_121244 20151006_121324 20151006_121325 20151006_121330

For our second group project (above) we decided to go with the parallel universe idea, since it seemed like it would be a lot more fun to make a world out of it, and the design of characters and architecture could be very interesting if we took it in the right direction.

We initially looked at the pot idea and the layered world idea however we decided against because it might have turned out to be offensive because of the topics involved in it like the blitz and the troubles. It also didn’t allow us a lot of expansion into a world, since it seemed more like an art sculpture with the way when you looked into a crack you could see the event in history and it didn’t allow us to create a lot of characters and the team seemed a lot more enthusiastic about the paradox/multiple civilisations world so we decided to go with that instead.

Our current idea is to have a world in which major civilisations in time like the incas, the roman empire, ancient greece, ancient egypt and the vikings are together at one time, we think it could be an interesting world because of how diverse the characters could be and how they would effect eachother not only culturally and religiously but also physically. We also won’t be putting it on earth, it may be a parallel ‘earth’ but it will not look the same due the change in events during time, for instance global warming would be far less noticeable. This world also allows for us to create our own future race, that also exists at this time. It won’t just be past civilisations, also because a lot of the past is unknown we can create our own history for the civilisations
